Web site "Preparing for a Lifetime" aims to protect babies

The state Health Department launched an online initiative Monday to promote healthy births and reduce the number of infant deaths in Oklahoma. The Web page "Preparing for a Lifetime” is aimed at women who are pregnant, might become pregnant and for people caring for infants.

In an average week in Oklahoma, eight babies die before reaching their first birthday, according to the Oklahoma Department of Health. Oklahoma ranked 41st among states for infant deaths in 2006.

The top causes of infant death in Oklahoma are disorders related to low birth weight, short gestation, congenital defects and sudden infant death syndrome.

"We’ve stayed in the same place for the last 15 years,” said Jill Nobles-Botkin, director of prenatal health for the Health Department. She said she hopes doctors will share information from the Web site with patients.

"It’s everyone’s responsibility to ensure that Oklahoma babies are born strong and healthy with a life full of potential,” said Oklahoma Health Commissioner Terry Cline.
